Mission

The mission of the Mathematics Program is to foster critical habits of mind in all our students: insightful curiosity, careful reasoning, cultural awareness and precise communication. The program is designed to prepare its students for a lifetime of meaningful engagement with the world through mathematics and mathematical reasoning.

By engaging with the program, students build substantive skills in quantitative and abstract reasoning and in their application to the study of modern society. Students’ experiences in the program cultivate reasoning and communication skills and behaviors that serve a broad range of careers: applied work in industry or government; research in mathematics, statistics, or one of the other mathematical sciences; teaching; or applying mathematics in the physical, biological, health, computing or social sciences.

Through innovative instruction and scholarship; experiential investigation and education; and industrial consultation and collaboration, our reach extends throughout the entire college and to the community of scholars and professionals beyond. The department’s course offerings serve students throughout the college with classes in quantitative reasoning, statistics, calculus and data science. The department also offers advanced courses in mathematics that support the completion of both pure and applied minors and majors in mathematics.
